My NYC Diary: Weeks 7 + 8

After getting back from Lake Wylie we were tired. I personally just had a lot going on, but I went n a long walk to the DVF sample sale where I got some goodies and went back to my internship on that Tuesday. Tuesday, we had a pick-up which meant that I got to go on a (very hot) walk break to go grab that garments from a stylist. It was a nice walk through Chelsea!

On Wednesday, Lauren and I took the Tram to Roosevelt Island. While we were there, we traveled to the southern end of the island, where we saw the first small pox hospital and the four freedoms park. After stopping at Starbucks (and cooling off because it was SO hot), we made our way down to the Blackwell House where we learned the history of the island. After we walked down the other end of the island, where there was a small lighthouse.

The next Friday we went to Governor’s Island (clearly it was the week of islands!), Governor’s Island has a national park, Fort Jay. Unfortunately, it was closed. We kind of just spent the day wondering around and ended up at the Oyster Bar on the island which had wonderful views of the city.

That Saturday we went to the 9/11 Museum. While I had gone before it’s put together and has a lot of information. One of the things that stood out to me was the dog exhibit. I don’t know if it was new or not, but I didn’t remember it from my last visit. There was also a plaque about the people who were stuck in an elevator, it was a story I hadn’t heard before either.

The next day there was a street fair in front of our apartment, so we spent the afternoon wandering around there. We had quesadillas and lemonade from one of the vendors, and I found some gifts to bring back to friends back home.

After a busy week interning, my mom came to town so that weekend was incredibly busy. We started off Thursday evening at the Top of Rock at sunset. I chose Top of the Rock on the recommendation from one the other interns at Marchesa. After, we went to Haru Sushi, and it was pretty good. Among other things, I tried the Tootsy Maki roll, and I really enjoyed it.

That next Friday morning we woke up to catch the ferry to Liberty Island. It was there that I learned more about Lady Liberty’s history and got burnt to a crisp – don’t forget your sunscreen! Some quotes that stood out to me were ”Liberty suggests violence and revolution,” and ”The statue began as an impulse of a beating heart.” After that we headed to Ellis Island where we followed the Blue tour (I don’t remember the proper name). For dinner we went to Carmine’s, where we enjoyed the most delicious bolognese pasta and stuffed clams.

Although I was in a lot of pain from the sunburn (I’ll reiterate: don’t forget your sunscreen!), It was a great start to the weekend with my mom. I finish the weekend in my next post for week 9!

Much Love,  Jacquelyn
